Half day visit of Cu Chi tunnel
North of Sai Gon lie the incredible Cu Chi Tunnels built by the Vietnamese resistance fighters during the years of struggle for independence. Four meters below the ground is a subterranean city on three different levels. This complex is spread over 200 kilometres and was able to withstand the force of repeated bombings. This subterranean city housed not only fighters but also schools and cinemas used by the local community.
Today the tunnels have been widened to allow easier access for the many overseas and local visitors who come tomarvel at the ingenuity and resilience of the war time inhabitants of Cu Chi.
Depart Sai Gon at 0830 in the morning or at 1330 in the afternoon for a drive to the Cu Chi Tunnels. Leaving the bustling city behind the scenery begins to change; first to lush rice paddies, then to rubber plantations, and finally to villagers drying noodles by the side of the road and going about their daily chores.
On arrival start the visit with the Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc sections of the tunnel. Here you can imagine what it was like to be a guerrilla complete with Russian Carbine rifles and AK 47′s. On display in the visitor’s section you can see a map of the tunnel system; this really helps you comprehend the complexity and the ingenious design of the tunnels.
Arrive back in Sai Gon at around 1230 or 1730 if you take the tour in the afternoon.
